Cape Cod Potato Chips

100 Breeds Hill Rd
Hyannis, MA  02601
1-888-881-CHIP

When I was a kid my Nana bought Cape Cod Chips and they were the greatest chips I had ever had.  It was always a treat to go to Nana's & Papa's and be able to have Cape Cod Chips.  I didn't realize they were kettle chips, my mom never bought them, so I never knew what made them special.

I remember reading the back of the bag and there was an image of a little map and a blurb about visiting the factory.  It was something that I always wanted to do and I tried to plan it out several times, it just never worked out.  Finally though on Friday March 28, 2014 it happened.

Shawn Michaels was appearing at World of Wheels in Boston and for a nominal fee you could get in and get a free autograph and photo with the Heartbreak Kid.  What started as a one day thing with Jay turned into a four night getaway for the wife and I and not only did it include the Shawn Michaels appearance but a checking out Cape Cod and Newport, Rhode Island. You can read about our Weekend Getaway at that link.

The Cape Cod Chip factory is located in Hyannis in and industrial park.  You follow the signs with the arrows leading you around the building to the parking area, some of them are confusing.

Once inside the tour itself is free, and it's just a long straight hallway that has view windows and signs where you can read all about the different stages as well as the history of the company.  The production area is very similar to that of Covered Bridge Chips (read about our tour here) except Covered Bridge has one cooker and Cape Cod has 9.

At the end of the tour is the gift shop, everyone is allowed to take two snack size bags of chips, which we did.  We also bought a magnet and chip bag clip.

My favorite flavors over the years have both been discontinued, Sour Cream & Chive and Sour Cream & Onion, my current favorite flavor White Cheddar & Sour Cream.  They also make waffle cut chips but they are too crunchy and hard for my liking.

They've made white cheddar popcorn on and off over the years.  I used to like it a lot but the current recipe I don't care for it.  Right now Utz White Cheddar Popcorn is my favorite.  The bag on the left is is how I first bought it before it, the middle bag was a new design before it was discontinued.  The bag on the right is teh new version and I don't like it.

Cape Cod's current product line consists of:

Original, Sea Salt & Vinegar, Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper, Sweet Mesquite Barbeque Aged White Cheddar & Sour Cream, all 5 of the flavors are also available in 40% reduced fat, Sweet & Spicy Jalapeno.

Waffle Cut: Sea Salt, Buffalo Cheddar, Barbecue

Limited Batch: the website lists Sweet Red Chili & Chipotle Barbeque however I recently saw at my local Hannaford Roasted Black Garlic and Smoked Gouda

Dipping Shells: Ancient Grain, Blue Corn Multigrain, and Four Bean

Popcorn: White Cheddar, Kettle Corn, Sea Salt, and Salted Caramel.

It was really cool to finally be able to take the tour. Although I do feel a bit of a traitor because I actually like Covered Bridge Chips better.

Updates Galore

This blog is currently undergoing a major overhaul, some changes will be noticeable and others not.  Originally on this blog I was only going to post about places I had been too since the start of the blog.  Due to a multitude of reasons I have not been to as many places as I would have liked to.  So I have decided to start reviewing places that I have been too in the past as well.  Although Hot Dogs and Burgers are going to be the primary purpose of this blog, I'm going to starting posting reviews on eateries and more that are not related to burgers or dogs.

So surf around and see whats new!

Covered Bridge Potato Chips

35 Alwight Ct
Waterville, New Brunswick, Canada E7P0A5
(506) 375-CHIP

Located in Waterville, New Brunswick the Covered Bridge Potato Chip Factory is just a few miles from their namesake, the Hartland Bridge, World's Longest Covered Bridge.  Spanning the St. John River it connects the towns of Somerville and Hartland and is an astonishing 1,282 feet.  The bridge is has one travel lane for vehicles and a foot bridge attached to the side.

While on our Honeymoon we visited the Covered Bridge Chip Factory and the Hartland Bridge on September 16, 2013.  I have always loved kettle chips, thanks to my Nana and her love of Cape Cod Potato Chips.  I first discovered Covered Bridge Chips at the former Webb's store in Randolph, Me and the wife and I loved them.  When planning our Honeymoon touring the factory became a must stop for us.

The factory itself is only a few years old opening in 2009 in a new development area.  We had no problem finding the area.  We paid the few dollar admission and headed into the production viewing area.

Essentially it's a long "L" shaped hallway with windows showing the cookers, cooling racks, flavoring station, and ect.  On the walls at each step is a sign the explains the process.  When we got there they were not making any chips.  I asked someone and they said they wouldn't be making any for a while.  A few minutes later he came back and said he was going to put another batch through, so we got to watch the magic in action.

As part of the tour they bring you a bag of unseasoned and unsalted fresh made chips.  They only use dark russet potatoes so they are naturally a dark and yet golden color.  As is they are delicious!

Back in the lobby and gift shop area they have a couple flavor stations where you can take the chips they gave you and sprinkle some signature and unique flavoring on them.  We had to try everyone one of them.  You could even buy little bags of flavoring.

Of all the flavored bags you can buy we liked them all, but my favorite is the sour cream and onion.

Current flavors available are: Storm Chips various flavors in one bag, Plain & Simple, Atlantic Canada's Thick Cut, Sea Salt & Vinegar, Sweet Potato & Sea Salt, Smokin' Sweat BBQ, Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper, Creamy Dill Pickle, Ketchup, Sea Salt, Atlantic Lobster (seasonal - summer months only), Montreal Steak, and Sour Cream & Onion.

Everyone there was super friendly and it was simple but a whole lot of fun!

The next morning we parked down near Hartland Bridge and walked the foot bridge, how could we not!

I'm not sure where you can get the chips locally in Maine anymore.  Webb's was destroyed in a fire and the other place we got them, Reny's no longer carries them.

If you ever get the chance to visit them in person you should, otherwise check out their website for more information. http://coveredbridgechips.com/en
